Mechanisms and consequences of internet addiction among students

The article is devoted to a comprehensive study of the mechanisms of students’ internet addiction and its multifaceted consequences. It is analyzed that digital technologies, while serving as an important tool of socialization, can simultaneously generate dysfunctional behavior manifested in the form of internet addiction. The main mechanisms of addiction formation are identified, including neurobiochemical, socio-cognitive, emotional, behavioral, technological, and environmental factors, which operate within an interconnected system.
Special attention is paid to the activation of the dopaminergic system, social self-presentation, the impact of rapid feedback in the virtual environment, and the features of online communication. The theory of hyperpersonal communication is also presented, according to which online interaction can become more intense and emotionally rich due to selective self-presentation, idealization of the interlocutor, and the controllability of communication.
The article emphasizes that internet addiction is particularly widespread among adolescents and may have negative social, psychological, physical, and educational consequences. The analysis of scientific literature shows that this issue requires a comprehensive approach, including the development of effective prevention and intervention strategies.
